What are the recommended lesson times for beginner, intermediate and advanced students?
Beginner students only require 30-min lessons. As the pieces become harder and longer (around grades 4-5), it might be necessary to increase this to 45-minute lessons. Advanced students (grade 8+) will require lessons that are 45-60-minutes long as the pieces are too lengthy and challenging to work through in a 30-minute time frame. However, beginner and intermediate students may sometimes choose to have longer lessons so that they can spend more time on certain aspects of their music education such as theory and aural skills.
What kind of piano should I have?
An acoustic piano is ideal but it might be more affordable to begin with a digital piano. However, the digital piano should be weighted, have 88 keys and come with a damper pedal. If the digital piano is not weighted, it will be difficult to develop the finger strength required to play on an actual piano.
How long should I be practicing?
Practice times will vary depending on your level and age. Consistent practice is more important than the length of practice. Beginners should aim to practice around 10-15 minutes every day.
What is the best age to start piano lessons?
The best age to begin is when your child displays an interest and readiness for music. Starting early allows children to develop a good ear. I have taught students from the age of 4 but some students are better prepared for formal lessons when they begin school.
Do you offer lessons for adult beginners?
Do you offer online lessons via Skype or Zoom?
I prefer in-person teaching as it allows me to assess and correct a student's piano technique through hands-on demonstration. Online lessons are less advantageous, as issues such as poor camera angles or audio quality may hinder my ability to effectively address specific techniques like dynamics and hand shape. Therefore, I do not offer online lessons other than in exceptional circumstances.
What happens if I cancel or miss a lesson?
The studio's policy is that cancelled or missed lessons are forfeited and non-refundable. However, if you are too ill to attend, an alternative Zoom or Skype lesson may be arranged if you provide sufficient notice (at least 1 hour before your lesson time).
